BUTE 2015

BUTE 2015
(2006)

The Isle of Bute was once one of the most famous islands in Scotland, known for its scenic beauty and over 100 benches. However, today most of these benches remain empty as people opt for flights to warmer destinations.

I created a series of benches across the Isle of Bute, each positioned at its most scenic location. These benches are strategically placed to offer the best views at different times of the day, encouraging visitors to take a leisurely walk from the south to the north of the island.

Each bench serves a different purpose: from a high perch in the morning, offering a fresh view from a treehouse; to a low bench on the grass in the afternoon; to a table-high bench in the evening for you and your lover to swing your legs; and finally, a night bench for lying back and stargazing. All of the benches are connected on a map, and to complete the journey, visitors trace the symbol of each bench as they go.
